(June 13, 2016) -- FBI Director James Comey today (June 13) provided an update on the Orlando mass shooting.
Mr. Comey indicated that the shooter [whose name Comey said he would try to avoid mentioning] had "strong indications of radicalization," likely inspired by foreign terrorist groups; shooter spoke with 911 operator three times during the attack, at one point pledged loyalty to ISIS leader. Director Comey acknowledged that the FBI had twice investigated ths shooter and closed its investigations: once in 2013 because after the shooter made "inflammatory and contradictory" statements about ties to terrorist groups (claimed family connections to al-Qaida and said he was a member of Hezbollah which is a Shia group opposed to ISIS). After closing that investigation, the FBI then began a second investigation in 2014 on whether shooter had any connections to a Florida man who blew himself up in a Syrian suicide attack on behalf of an Al-Queda front group, found "no ties of consequence" between them.
