(June 1, 2016, 1:30 a.m.) -- JetBlue Airways Corporation, plus Orange County and Ventura County Firefighters Union PACs and a Pasadena-based Operating Engineers Union PAC have brought total contributions to over $401,000 for the political campaign committee supporting LB City Hall's ballot measure (Measure A) that would raise LB's sales tax to 10% (currently 9% in Lakewood/Signal Hill and 8% in most OC cities) for any general fund items the Mayor and Council wish.
Contributions to the "Mayor Garcia, Foster & O'Neill Committee to Support Measures A & B to Protect Police & Fire and Repair Infrastructure in Long Beach. Major Funding by Long Beach Police Officers Association PAC and Long Beach Firefighters PAC, Local 372" have have now reached $401,191 (a total that includes $36,941 in non-monetary contributions.) As previously reported by LBREPORT.com, other sums received by the Committee in May include:
To launch the campaign, LB's police officers union PAC gave the campaign committee $100,000 and LB's firefighters union PAC gave the campaign committee $50,000, and together contributed roughly $21,000 as in-kind contributions to pay for a survey that contended the public would support a sales tax increase if told that it would fund police, fire and infrastructure. Lyon s Communities and Affiliated Entities gave the campaign committee a $16,000 in kind contribution for office space.
Measure A doesn't mention police, fire, infrastructure of any specific items. It is legally a general tax that the current and future Council can spend on any general fund items. In putting the measure on the ballot, the Council approved a non-binding resolution stating the Council's "intent" to prioritize spending of the tax revenue on police, fire and infrastructure; it will also create a "citizen advisory committee" (chosen by the Mayor) that can review but not change Mayor recommended and Council approved spending. Vote by mail ballots began flying May 9. Election Day is June 7. blog comments powered by Disqus Recommend LBREPORT.com to your Facebook friends:
