(June 9, 2016) -- Just hours before election day, the Long Beach Police Officers Association PAC gave another $50,000 (in addition to its $200,000 previously contributed), and the LB Firefighters Association PAC gave another $20,000 (in addition to it $50,000 previously contributed) to the political committee that ran the campaign for Measure A to raise LB's sales tax to 10% (currently 9% in Lakewood/Signal Hill and 8% in most OC cities). The measure passed by a roughly 60-40 margin with only grassroots, non-unified, poorly funded opposition. City Hall wrote the measure as a general tax, meaning current Mayors and Council can spend its revenue for any general fund items they wish.
The LBPOA PAC gave a cash total of $250,000, and the LB Firefighters Ass'n PAC gave a cash total of $70,000 to the "Mayor Garcia, Foster & O'Neill Committee to Support Measures A & B to Protect Police & Fire and Repair Infrastructure in Long Beach. Major Funding by Long Beach Police Officers Association PAC and Long Beach Firefighters PAC, Local 372." In addition, both unions contributed an in-kind total of roughly $21,000 for a voter survey in January 2016 that concluded voters would support a sales tax increase if told it would fund police, fire and infrastructure items. The two unions, and other City Hall public employee unions, are preparing to negotiate new contracts with the City following the election.
The the latest reported sums increased the committee's total collected to (our unofficial totaling) $615,391 (cash + non-monetary contribs), with $578,450 of the total in cash.

Measure A is a general tax that the current and future Council can spend on any general fund items. In putting the measure on the ballot, the Council approved a non-binding resolution stating the Council's "intent" to prioritize spending of the tax revenue on police, fire and infrastructure; it will also create a "citizen advisory committee" (chosen by the Mayor) that can review but not change Mayor recommended and Council approved spending.
