(March 27, 2001) -- Bonnie Lowenthal has been elected 1st district LB Councilmember. She won handily, drawing 54% of the vote in a "winner take all" special election held to fill the seat vacated by Jenny Oropeza, who was elected in November to the state Assembly .

Ms. Lowenthal is an incumbent LB School Board member. She was formerly married to Alan Lowenthal, now a LB area Assemblymember and former 2d district LB Councilmember.

Christine Rodriguez-Lara, who finished second with 22% of the vote, was supported by the former incumbent, Ms. Oropeza. Ms. Lowenthal led in fundraising.
