City Hall Releases "Citywide" 2001 Crime Totals, But Not Neighborhood and Council District Data Yet

Total LB Reported Crime "Citywide" Up 11%, But Some Neighborhoods May Be Higher or Lower

(March 1, 2002) -- LB City Hall today released citywide crime data for the period Jan 1-Dec. 31, 2002...but has not yet released detailed neighborhood and Council district crime data.

By definition, citywide crime stats combine disparate parts of the city, homogenizing safer areas with others where residents may be disproportionately crime impacted.

LBReport.com has previously posted LBPD's detailed crime data and will do so when it is released (expected shortly).

The citywide data released by City Hall today indicate that in 2001 (compared to 2000):

  • LB had an 11% increase in overall reported crime;

  • Part 1 (including violent crimes and major property) reported crimes increased 4.5% (mainly aggravated assaults including gang violence), auto theft, commercial and auto burglary. However, robbery dropped 7.1%, grand theft declined 2.4% and residential burglary fell 2.3%;

  • Part 2 (other) crimes increased 19.2%, with most of the increase attributable to marijuana possession under one ounce and identity theft. (LBPD notes it has implemented a new Identity Theft Detail to help counter the latter rise.)
