Fatal Wrigley Shooting Witnessed By LBPD Officer Who Chases Suspect On Foot, Assisted by 2d Officer; 2d Officer Shoots Suspect; Suspect Lives; Suspect's Shooting Victim Dies

(March 22, 2003) -- The Wrigley area and 6th Council district suffered more gunfire and death last night when a shooting in the area of 21st St. and Pacific Ave. took the life of a Long Beach resident.

LBPD says that on March 21 at roughly 6:00 p.m., a male Black suspect (whose name was not released due to an ongoing investigation) shot 23 year old Pedro Alcala Jr. of LB twice in the upper torso. An LBPD officer on patrol witnessed the shooting and chased the suspect on foot, assisted by another LBPD officer on the area. When the chase reached the area of Willard St. between Pacific and Pine Avenues, the assisting officer fired his weapon at the suspect, striking him in the torso multiple times.

The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital, listed in stable condition...and was arrested and booked for murder (plus a parole violation).

The suspect's shooting victim, Mr. Alcala, was also taken to a hospital. He was pronounced dead from his wounds.

Police say the motive for the murder is under investigation...and anyone with information is asked to call LBPD Homicide Detectives Mark McGuire or Chris Cardoza at (562) 570-7244.
