Wrong-Way 710 Driver Killed, His Two Passengers Critically Injured, When Their Car Smashes Head-On Into SUV
(March 21, 2004) -- Shortly after 2:00 a.m. on Sunday March 21, a driver entered the southbound lanes of the 710 freeway at Broadway driving in the wrong direction.

Photo: Capt. Scott Clegg, LBFD | LBPD says the driver of the wrong-way vehicle, Vegas Matautia, 31, of LB was pronounced dead at the scene, and two passengers in his car were taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
The driver of the southbound SUV and a passenger in that vehicle were taken to a local hospital and treated for injuries described as minor to moderate. |
LBFD Public Information Officer Capt. Scott Clegg says Engine 13, Rescue 13, Engine 1, Truck 1, Rescue 1, USAR [Urban Search and Rescue, with sophistated extrication gear] 6 and Battalion Chief 1 responded to the scene. USAR 6 used the Jaws of Life to cut a survivor from the wreckage.
In a written release, LBPD says a second car was following the wrong-way vehicle but was not involved in the collision.
