LBPD says the driver of the wrong-way vehicle, Vegas Matautia, 31, of LB was pronounced dead at the scene, and two passengers in his car were taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the southbound SUV and a passenger in that vehicle were taken to a local hospital and treated for injuries described as minor to moderate.

LBFD Public Information Officer Capt. Scott Clegg says Engine 13, Rescue 13, Engine 1, Truck 1, Rescue 1, USAR [Urban Search and Rescue, with sophistated extrication gear] 6 and Battalion Chief 1 responded to the scene. USAR 6 used the Jaws of Life to cut a survivor from the wreckage.

In a written release, LBPD says a second car was following the wrong-way vehicle but was not involved in the collision.
