(March 10, 2004) -- LBReport.com posts a link below to the latest Academic Performance Index (API) base scores, growth targets and school rankings for LB schools released by the CA Dept. of Education.
We also post a link below allowing readers to enter the name of a school and get detailed information on that school.
The CA Dept. of Education data ranks each school academically in deciles from 1 to 10 (10 = the highest), indicating a school's standing compared to other schools statewide (statewide ranks).
Each school is also ranked compared to others statewide with "similar characteristics" (similar schools ranks). Similar characteristics include average class size, percent of students who are English learners, percent of teachers who hold emergency credentials or are fully credentialed, and student mobility, ethnicity and socioeconomic status.
Each school's academic performance and progress are measured by a numeric index ranging from 200 to 1000; 800 is what the state deems its target for academic performance.
- LB Elementary schools had APIs from midrange to high...with several very high: Lowell = 899; Gant = 889; Naples = 876; Fremont = 862
- Middle School APIs ranged from Rogers = 802, Stanford = 789 to Franklin = 557, Washington = 566
- High School API's ranged from the CA Acad Math & Science at 929 to Cabrillo at 502. In the midrange were Avalon, Poly, Wilson, Lakewood, Millikan and Savannah, ranging from 687 to 639. Jordan's API was 528.

The CA Dept. of Education notes that direct comparison with APIs in past years is not appropriate, since the latest API base scores reflect two new indicators: the CST (CA Standards Tests) Science and the CA Alternate Performance Assessment (taken by students with significant cognitive disabilities). These have changed indicator weights slightly for grades 9-11. The CAHSEE indicator now also includes only grade 10 results.
The API continues to include the CST English Language Arts, as well as results for CST Mathematics for grades 2-11, and CST Social Science results for grades 10-11.
