Knife-Wielding Woman Allegedly Threatens People Downtown, Barricades Herself in Bldg...And Is Successfully Taken Into Custody By LBPD

(March 12, 2004) -- LBPD successfully defused a dangerous situation on March 12 after a knife-wielding woman allegedly threatened people near 1st and Pine, then strolled into an office building at 100 W. Ocean Blvd. and headed to an office, allegedly threatening people there before barricading herself inside.

LBPD Public Information Officer Greg Schirmer says officers arrived shortly after 3:00 p.m., evacuated people from the building and began negotiating with the woman in her 30s. The Mental Evaluation Team was on scene while officers tried to negotiate with the woman. At one point she, began banging on doors with the knife, then allegedly hurled it through the air down a hallway.

Officers had taken safe positions and weren't injured by the flying knife...and moved up to an adjoining office. At just the right moment when the woman stuck her arms out a door, officers pulled her out of the office and took her into custody.

She was transported to a local hospital for mental evaluation.

    No injuries reported.
