(March 14, 2004) -- Signal Hill PD, assisted by LBPD, apprehended a LB man who drove into the Promontory gated community atop Signal Hill at 3 a.m. March 14 by crashing through its exit gate and coming to rest after colliding with a fence surrounding the recreation center and pool.
In a written release, SHPD says officers found the 35 year-old driver allegedly twisting the doorknob of the rec center and unresponsive to orders to stop. (Eventually, he allegedly displayed the doorknob to officers.)
Signal Hill officers used pepper spray and beanbag rounds (the beanbags struck him twice), all with no apparent effect.
LBPD arrived, assisted with a Taser device and the man was taken into custody (and to a local hospital for examination, as is routine when Taser and beanbag rounds are used.)
The predawn commotion rousted a number of residents in the private, upscale development.
SHPD says it intends to file charges against the man alleging malicious mischief, DUI (drugs) and obstructing officers in the performance of their duty.
