News House Explodes, Suspected Illegal Fireworks; Area Resident Says Lakewood City Hall & Sheriffs Were Told About Fireworks Last Year
(March 5, 2006) -- An explosion allegedly linked to illegal fireworks in a Lakewood home (area b/w Bellflower Blvd and Woodruff Ave., north of South St., south of Ashworth St.) damaged the residence, started a fire, broke windows, scattered debris some distance away and was felt at least a mile away at about 6:50 a.m. Sunday (March 5). | Photo from Lakewood resident |
The L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. says an explosion and fire occurred at a residence in the 6100 block of Dunrobin Ave. Sheriff's detectives arrested Brian Miller, 36, a resident at the location, for possession of illegal fireworks.
A Lakewood reader of LBReport.com reported feeling "the ground shake a mile away"...and said fireworks were reported at the location in 2005 but "Sheriffs refused to do anything."
The reader provided LBReport.com with a copy of a June 2005 letter sent by a familymember to Lakewood Mayor Joseph Esquivel, cc'd to Lakewood Councilmembers, L.A. County Supervisor Don Knabe, Lakwood Deputy City Mgr. Sandi Ruyle...and Com. Dave Fender of the Lakewood Sheriff's station, complaining about a lack of action regarding alleged fireworks at the location.
