Wrigley Ass'n To Unveil Innovative Format For LB Mayoral Candidate Forum Tonight (Mon. Mar. 6)

(March 6, 2006) -- LB's Wrigley Association will try an innovative format at its Mayoral candidates forum tonight (March 6, 7:30-9:00 p.m.)

    Moderator Alan Tolkoff says:

Each candidate will have 15 solo minutes to use as he likes. He may talk the entire time or take Q&A from the audience via written questions read by the moderator or a combination the two.

He may spend as much time on an answer as he likes, so long as he finishes in 15 minutes. The objective is to allow voters to get a better feel for the individual candidates and their knowledge of the issues.

They won't have several minutes to form an answer while others are talking. Also, by allowing the candidate to control his segment, we hope it will be more free flowing and interesting. Also, the audience can direct questions that are specific to each candidate.

The candidates will take turns in reverse alphabetical order, starting at 7:30. Stolpe, Rephan, Foster, Drummond and Colonna. At 8:45 there will be two short rounds of closing remarks and/or rebuttals, 90 and 60 seconds, respectively. Each candidate will have the opportunity to address remarks made by other candidates if any choose to do so. The final round's order will be determined at random.

As far as we are aware, the concept of written questions from the audience, screened by a panel and presented by a moderator to all candidates in random order was begun by the Wrigley Association in the 1994 campaigns. There are at least 30 mayoral forums in this election primary using this format; so we're trying something new in hopes of allowing the candidates to present a different side of themselves. We also hope that this format will be more entertaining, by virtue of its difference.

    Tally ho!
