Iraq War Opponents March Thru Much of LB, Part of 241-Mile TJ to SF Trek

(March 17, 2006, updated) - The fifth day of a march from Tijuana to San Francisco to protest U.S. policy in Iraq wound through much of LB on March 16. The LB leg of the march began at 7:30 a.m. on Ocean Blvd. in front of LB City Hall/civic center. The "241 Mile March for Peace," modeled after Mahatma Gandhi’s historic 'Salt March,' began in Tijuana on March 12 and is scheduled to reach SF on March 26.

In photo, Pablo Paredes, a U.S. Navy sailor court-martialed for refusing to board his ship carrying Marines bound for Iraq, and Fernando Suarez del Solar, whose son died in the Iraq War.

A press release indicates the march is "aimed at raising the voice of opposition to the war in Iraq within the Latino community."

Marchers Richard Madiera and John Donahoe display banners. The marchers started downtown, traveled up Atlantic Ave. through Central LB and Bixby Knolls.

They reached LB's Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Houghton Park in the noon hour and conducted a service before continuing northward through Compton, reaching Maywood at day's end. LB Co-organizer Sharon Cotrell said a number of media outlets were present.

Ms. Cotrell adds that there was an assembly at Lynwood High School attended by almost 500 youth who prepared a meal for the marchers after school.

The marchers' arrival in LB didn't impress everyone. In response to our original article previewing the march, one ELB reader emailed, "The liars' parade starts. Remember the Nam War? They sound the same."

[update] On reading this, another reader emailed in return, "Tell that person - 'yeah, we do remember - that's why they are marching!!!'

Yet another responded, "I had to laugh at the ELB reader emailed who e-mailed you 'The liars' parade starts. Remember the Nam War? They sound the same.' I should hope so! I DO remember the Vietnam war, eerily. You mean there are still people around who don’t think the U.S. course of action in Vietnam was an ill-advised waste of U.S. soldier’s lives? Or haven’t heard that the administration lied to Congress and the American public about the Tonkin Gulf?"
