News Mayor Foster Visits Students At Henry & Chavez Elementary Schools For "Science In The School Day"
(March 1, 2007) -- LB Mayor Bob Foster visited Patrick Henry Elementary and Cesar Chavez Elementary Schools today (the latter with some students from Edison Elemenaty stopping by) (Mar. 1) for a "Science in the School Day" event. The event, described in a release as part of a Cities United for Science Progress (CUSP) partnership between the U.S. Conference of Mayors and DuPont, gave Mayor Foster a chance to stress the importance of science education. | Photo source: Mayor's office |

"Puff Mobiles" use everyday materials like drinking straws, lifesavers, paper, scotch-tape and paperclips.
Mayor Foster had the students race their creations to find the "fastest Puff Mobile in the city" and then presented the budding scientists with certificates of achievement. | Photo source: Mayor's office |
"The Science in the School Day initiative is a meaningful way to inspire our students to pursue futures in engineering, science, and math," said Mayor Foster in the release. "Long Beach schools value science education and today we helped plant the seed with 320 students across the entire city. Hopefully we have encouraged these students to consider a career in math and science and perhaps aspire to one day grow-up to be an engineer," he added.
"A diverse pool of talented engineers is required for our country, and our company, to remain competitive in a rapidly changing global market," said Mary Kate Campbell, DuPont’s public affairs manager in the release. "Together we hope our field engineer, Mayor Foster and the city leaders...were successful in motivating 320 schoolchildren toward the further exploration of science, mathematics and engineering."
"CUSP serves as a useful tool for teachers, students and children across the country and helps revive a much-needed interest in science," said Tom Cochran, executive director of the U.S. Conference of Mayors."
