LB City Prosecutor + LB Animal Care Services Will Hold Free Educational Event Aimed At Preventing Animal Cruelty: Mar. 29, 6:00-8:30 p.m. @ Skylinks Golf Course

(Mar. 26, 2012) -- LB City Prosecutor Doug Haubert and LB's Animal Care Services are organizing a free educational event on March. 29 (6:00-8:30 p.m., Skylinks golf course), aimed at preventing animal cruelty. "Learn how to identify animal cruelty and how to stop it," says an event announcement.

Among the prominent speakers:

  • Eric Sakach, Senior Law Enforcement Specialist for the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Over the past 33 years (he joined HSUS in 1976 as an investigator and was director of its West Coast Regional Office from 1995-2008), an event release says Mr. Sakach has been involved in numerous animal cruelty and animal fighting investigations and his "undercover work led to more than 500 arrests and some of the first convictions under the federal Animal Welfare Act. He has also authored or assisted in numerous law enforcement investigation manuals and training videos on animal cruelty and animal fighting, and has instructed thousands of humane and law enforcement personnel throughout the United States, Canada, and Brazil."

  • L.A. County Deputy District Attorney Deborah Knaan, who created the DA office's first animal cruelty prosecution program. She supervises animal cruelty prosecution for the D.A.'s office and is responsible for overseeing the prosecution of animal cruelty cases within L.A. County. She also trains both Deputy D.A.’s and animal control and law enforcement agencies on how to investigate, file, and prosecute cases in which animals have been mistreated.

  • Long Beach City Prosecutor Doug Haubert, whose office handles over 14,000 misdemeanor cases, mostly involving two legged defendants...but also animal cruelty cases. "Animal cruelty is a crime that often goes unnoticed and unreported. The goal of this conference is to raise awareness about what constitutes cruelty, and teach the public what they can do to help stop it," City Prosecutor Haubert says.

The event will take place from 6:00-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 29, 2012, at Skylinks golf course, 4800 E. Wardlow Rd. at Lakewood Blvd. (across from LB Airport). Admission is free.

In a study of media reports compiled by the Humane Society of the U.S., 64.5% of all animal cruelty cases reported involved dogs, while 18% of reported cases involved cats.

The event is funded via sponsorships and grants, including support from the HSUS, Golden State Humane Society, Friends of Long Beach Animals, and local businesses...and sponsorship opportunities are still available.

RSVP’s are recommended (562) 570-5626).
