Countdown Clocks

(Mar. 14, 2014) -- It was an especially disturbing shooting in the area of Artesia Blvd./Myrtle Ave at midafternoon Monday, Feb. 10 near Jordan High (not in session on the Lincoln birthday holiday), roughly half a block north of 9th district City Councilman Steven Neal's field office in Houghton Park.

And the shooting turned into murder, when 22 year old Robert Anthon Proana of Long Beach died the next morning.

LBPD identified a suspect, found him...and arrested him on Wednesday Mar. 12. As of Friday Mar. 14, he now faces charges filed by the District Attorney alleging murder with gang enhancement and weapons charges.

[LBPD release text] On March 12, 2014, Long Beach detectives arrested 24 year-old Joseph Avila (A.K.A. Joe Avila) at his residence in Long Beach for the murder of Robert Anthony Proano. Robert was shot and killed near the corner of Myrtle Avenue and Artesia Boulevard in Long Beach on February 10, 2014. The motive for the murder is believed to be gang related.

On March 14, 2014, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office filed murder and weapons charges along with gang enhancements against Joseph Avila. He is currently being held at the Long Beach Jail on $1,040,000 bail.
