Countdown Clocks

(Mar. 17, 2014) -- LBPD today announced the arrest of two persons in the case of a woman assaulted, beaten and robbed as she walked through an apartment complex roughly a block of so from LBPD's East Division station.

The arrests were made Mar. 12 -- barely a block from LBPD's East Division police station -- when a 20 year old man (adult) and a 15 year old juvenile were taken into custody for trespassing. LBPD detectives learned more during their investigation, and the L.A. County District Attorney's office has now filed attempted murder, battery with serious injury, assault by means of committing great bodily injury, and robbery against the man while the matter remains under investigation regarding the 15-year-old juvenile who was with the now-charged defendant at the time of the assault (and was released to his parents on March 12.)

The arrests come after LBPD released composite sketches of the persons of interest wanted in connection with its investigation...and LBPD says a resident saw the sketches and picked up the phone without hesitation,

[LBPD release text] ...The arrests were made after releasing composite sketches of two persons of interest wanted for questioning in connection with the investigation.

On Wednesday, March 12, 2014, officers were dispatched to the area of 2000 Park Avenue regarding two suspicious subjects who were seen on the grounds of the apartment complex. Officers made contact with the subjects, one adult, and one juvenile, and arrested them for trespassing. During the course of the investigation, detectives learned the subjects had knowledge of the prior assault. On Friday, March 14, 2014, after compiling all the evidence, detectives presented the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, and the following charges were filed against 20-year-old Jonathan Britton of Long Beach: attempt murder, battery w/ serious injury, assault by means of committing great bodily injury, and robbery. He remains in custody at the Los Angeles County Men's Central Jail.

Detectives believe that Defendant Britton was the aggressor in the assault. The matter remains under investigation for the 15-year-old juvenile suspect who was with Britton at the time of the assault, and was released to his parents on March 12th.

The Long Beach Police Department continually stresses the importance of being aware of what is taking place your neighborhood, and calling 9-1-1 immediately upon seeing any suspicious person or activity, and in this case, a community member did exactly that. Stated Robbery Detail Sergeant David Schillig, "A resident had seen the sketches we released and picked-up the phone without hesitation. As a direct result of their actions, we will be able to hold accountable the individuals [LBPD and the DA allege] responsible for this horrific and brutal crime."

Anyone who may have information regarding this ongoing investigation should contact Long Beach Police Robbery Detective Mark Steenhausen at (562) 570-7465.
