(Mar 24, 5:35 a.m.) -- Vice Mayor Robert Garcia has reacted to the Sunday (Mar. 23) predawn shooting (600 block LB Blvd.) in his Council district, which left one person dead (LBREPORT.com coverage here) with the Twitter tweet below (Sunday p.m.) The tweet doesn't mention that the shooting included four victims, one of whom died, or that it occurred outside a business in his Council district.
Garcia, appointed to chair the Council's Public Safety Committee by Mayor Bob Foster in the latter half of 2010, didn't hold hearings of his Committee on the public safety impacts of the budgets proposed by Mayor Foster in August for the past two years, including the proposed FY12 budget that would have eliminated LBPD's field anti-gang unit. LBPD is investigating Sunday's multi-victim shooting as possibly gang related and other occasions has indicated that most of LB's violent crimes are gang related. In Sept. 2012, other Council members moved to restore funding for up to half of the LBPD field anti-gang unit for one year and Garcia and the full Council agreed. In August 2013 (during the FY14 budget cycle), the Council's Budget Oversight Committee (chair DeLong) learned from LBPD management that the field anti-gang unit at that point no longer had nearly half of the halved officers for which the Council had authorized funding.
