(Mar. 11, 2014) -- One week after the horrific NLB fatal shooting of a man at Linden Ave./59th St., LBPD arrested two suspects (March 7) and yesterday (Mar 10) the L.A. County District Attorney's office filed murder, assault with a deadly weapon and gang enhancement charges against both individuals.
"Detectives worked diligently on the case," says an LBPD release, which continues: [LBPD release text] On March 7, 2014, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Long Beach detectives arrested David Smith, a 25 year-old resident of Long Beach, and James Smith, a 21 year-old resident of Long Beach, in the 400 block of W. Century Blvd in the City of Los Angeles. The Feb. 21st fatal shooting was roughly a block from a new library under construction that elected officials have hailed as part of an Uptown Renaissance. LBPD asks anyone with information about the 59th/Linden murder to contact LBPD Homicide Detectives Hugo Cortes and Peter Lackovic at (562) 570-7244. The 59th/Linden fatal shooting was LB's fifth murder of 2014, the second this year in NLB. One day later (Feb. 22), a third NLB fatal shooting occurred, LB's 6th murder of 2014, this time on Andy St. (one block north of South St. at Downey Ave. between Paramount and Lakewood Blvds.) On March 3, 9th dist. Councilman Steven Neal held a public "town hall" style meeting with LBPD North Division Commander Robert Luman, in partnership with the Long Beach Ministers Alliance, Light and Life Christian Fellowship, Men Making A Change and Andy Street Community Association to address youth violence" at Light and Life Christian Fellowship.
