(Mar. 11, 2014) -- The family of Sofia Flores, a two year old diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (affecting 1% of children) is urgently seeking a bone marrow donor match that might save her life.
The A3MHope.org website says she's Hispanic and Caucasian and "more likely to find a donor among those people of her own ethnicity," A November 2013 effort to find a match in the Los Altos area was unsuccessful. Time is of the essence and there's hope that a donor may exist among Long Beach's diverse population. The process is quick, noninvasive and only requires testing a swab of saliva to find out if one is a match. Councilman Patrick O'Donnell says Sofia's family is partnering with A3M, a local recruitment center for Be the Match to hold two upcoming donor recruitment drives in downtown Long Beach. The first is at midday this coming Thursday Mar. 13 followed by another two weeks later on Thurs. March 27. They'll be held at the World Trade Center, 601 W. Ocean Blvd. just west of Magnolia Ave. It could take just five minutes at about lunch time to save the life of Sofia or one of millions of other children.
