(March 19, 2015) -- Might a Belmont Shore parking structure rise in the are of 2nd St. at Claremont Ave.?

The property at 5374 2nd. St (colloquially known as the "Roe" property, reflecting its former incarnation as a restaurant and fish market) is up for sale...and it's zoned to accommodate building a parking structure.

On March 16, the office of Third district Councilwoman Suzie Price sent a mass emailing announcing a March. 30 community meeting to talk in very preliminary terms about what City Hall may or may not want to pursue:

[Councilwoman Price mass email text] -- I will be holding an informational meeting on Monday, March 30th at 5:30 PM at the Third District Field Office (340 Nieto Avenue) to discuss the process involved with the City possibly acquiring the Roe property (5374 East 2nd Street, just west of Bay Shore Ave.) to develop a public parking lot and/or structure.

This proposal is very preliminary and has not been publicly vetted. The only thing that has been determined by the City's Development Services Department is that the Roe property is zoned for this type of use (public parking lot and/or structure). I hope you will be available to join us to discuss the process involved with this type of transaction.

As reported last year by LBREPORT.com, a public brouhaha ensued when city officials took preliminary steps toward purchasing a residence on La Verne Ave. just north of 2nd St. for a small parking lot. Then Council-candidate Price was visible and witnessed firsthand some of the polarized community meetings that resulted from the proposed elimination of a residence for a few parking spaces...and the deal didn't go forward.

Parking is a sore point for 2nd St. businesses and adjacent neighborhoods. A chronic shortage of parking for 2nd St. businesses pushes customers in search of parking into nearby residential areas where parking is already very scarce.

Developing...with further to follow.
