(Mar. 11, 2016, 2:10 a.m. from multiple Mar. 10 updates as breaking) -- LBPD officers in NW LB as part of a strategic deployment to impact violent crime after increased shooting incidents citywide, encountered a man who they say exited a vehicle, ran from them into an alley, allegedly produced a firearm, refused to drop it and an officer involved shooting occurred...in which the suspect didn't survive.

In response to increased shooting incidents citywide, the Long Beach Police Department has been strategically deploying resources to impact violent crime. As a result of these efforts, more guns have been removed from city streets in the first two months of 2016 than in the same time frame last year.

The preliminary investigation revealed that officers, who were part of the resource deployment, were patrolling in the area of 68th Street and Long Beach Boulevard when they observed a vehicle code violation. Then the vehicle began driving through the neighborhood acting in a suspicious and evasive manner.

Prior to the officers initiating a traffic stop, the vehicle suddenly stopped in the middle of Long Beach Boulevard, a passenger exited the vehicle, and fled on foot to escape the officer's traffic stop.

Officers chased the suspect to an alley in the area of 68th Street and Orcutt Avenue, approximately a block and a half from where the vehicle stopped. As the suspect entered an alley, he produced a firearm, refused to drop it, and an officer involved shooting occurred.

Immediately after the shooting, officers rendered medical aid and requested Long Beach Fire Department respond. Officers continued to render assistance until Fire personnel arrived.

The male adult suspect sustained a gunshot injury to the upper torso. Long Beach Fire Department personnel transported the suspect to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

A gun was recovered at the scene. The driver is outstanding. No further description of the driver of the vehicle is being released.

Identification of the suspect will be made by the Los Angeles County Coroner. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office is conducting it’s own independent investigation as to the cause of death.

The Long Beach Homicide Detail investigates all officer involved shootings. This investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call LBPD Homicide Detail at (562) 570-7244.
