(May 31, 2002) -- LBPD says that on May 30 at roughly 8:27 p.m. -- while a number of LBPD units were drawn from areas including North Division to respond to the downtown multiple shooting at 5th/Pacific -- a gun battle in the courtyard of a NLB apartment building left a 34 year old man dead.
LBPD says North Division officers responded to a "shots fired" call in the 6800 block of LB Blvd and found the body of an African-American man in the alley behind an apartment building.
Police say they subsequently learned a gun battle had taken place between the victim and at least two suspects in the courtyard of the apartment building, and the suspects fled westbound over a fence behind the residence and across the alley.
The victim, struck twice in his upper back, was pronounced dead at the scene. No motive for the shooting has been determined.
Anyone with information about this crime is asked to contact LBPD Homicide Detectives Stephen Jones and Mark McGuire.
