Helen Kellogg, Bixby Knolls Icon, Passes

(May 19, 2004) -- Bixby Knolls icon Helen Kellogg has passed away.

The mother of sons Jeffrey (LBCC Trustee, former 8th district Councilman), Keith (Retired U.S. military Lt. General), Mike (Superior Court Judge) and daughter Kathie (PhD, Clinical Psychologist) passed away on May 15.

Son Jeff told LBReport.com that his mother slipped away peacefully, surrounded by her family in the Bixby Knolls home she'd occupied for over half a century. She was 88.

After the family moved to Bixby Knolls from the Wrigley area in 1953, Mrs. Kellogg became active -- many would say an omnipresence -- in the community: PTA activities at Longfellow and Poly, Jordan High's Booster Club, Memorial Hospital's childrens' auxiliary support group, Petroleum Club Wives' Club (president in the 1960s), life member of the LB Assistance League, and involvement in the predecessor group to what is now the Republican Womens Federated.

"She really enjoyed life," said son Jeff, adding that she particularly enjoyed "engaging in dialogue and debating things. That could mean debating what you're going to wear or major issues facing the country."

Son Jeff said his mother had endured arduous dialysis treatments three times a week for several years...and she recently decided to end the procedures. "We asked if she was afraid, and she said no," he said.

He added that his mother had "lived a good life and of course we miss her...but you never really lose someone like this. She may not be here with us, but you don't lose someone who's been such a big part of your life."

8th district Councilman Rob Webb announced Mrs. Kellogg's passing at the conclusion of the May 18 City Council meeting...which was adjourned in her memory.

Services will be at All Souls Mortuary, 4400 Cherry Ave. with Viewing on May 21 (3 p.m.-7 p.m.), Rosary at 7 p.m. and Funeral Mass on May 22 (11 a.m.).
