What Happened? Approx. Ninety Minutes Into Council Meeting, Mayor O'Neill Announces Agendized LNG Item Won't Be Heard Until June 21; Read Her Verbatim Explanation
(May 24, 2005) -- In a stunning announcement roughly ninety minutes into tonight's Council meeting, LB Mayor Beverly O'Neill stated that an item agendized by City Manager Jerry Miller and City Attorney Bob Shannon, seeking Council policy direction on a closely watched proposal to build an 80+ million gallon Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility in the Port of LB roughly two miles from downtown LB, will not be heard until June 21.
LBReport.com believes what has taken place, and the Mayor's statement attempting to explain it, are newsworthy beyond the agendized subject matter.
We post Mayor O'Neill's statement below exactly as she delivered it:
I couldn't make this announcement earlier because it wasn't determined exactly what the procedure was going to be but I want to tell you about the change in the agenda.
And you've seen a lot of activity here as to what the agenda had this evening and we are going to change some agenda items. I will tell you what they are. If you want to leave at that time you're welcome to. Don't throw tomatoes on the way out, because when you come for something very important and then agenda is changed, I know it has really conflicted with your schedules.
So item number two has been withdrawn, that's the appeal of a gas billing dispute, and that will be continued on the [June] 21st; item number three will be continued, we will not be talking on the hearings.
Items number four and number thrity [thirty is the LNG item] and many of you have signs for thirty will be withdrawn from this evening and agendized for the 21st of June. [audible audience consternation]
There were too many questions, there were too many questions that the Council had, the people that wanted to have some decisions this evening, we could not come to without staying here for three nights answering questions and they have to find out some things on their own.
So I apologize to you if you were here for that item, but we will go on. I'll wait a couple of minutes if you want to leave...
Developing.
