  • (May 3, 2009, multiple updates from front page breaking) -- LBPD says its police officers were ambushed by a gun-wielding LB resident at two locations in the predawn darkness Sunday (May 3).

LBPD says the man first opened fire on officers in the 1100 block of Chestnut Ave., then fled to a second location about a block away where he allegedly opened fire on arriving/responding officers on 12th St...after which an officer shot the armed man.

The armed suspect -- identified at late afternoon by the L.A. County Coroner's office as James Neal Tuggle, 29, of Long Beach -- didn't survive. No officers were injured.

LBPD says multiple weapons were recovered from the crime scenes. Investigations are ongoing. The aftermath was visible on the streets.

A police car, its passenger window shattered by gunfire, was visible (below) in the 1100 block of Chestnut Ave. (the initial responding location). [uninvolved vehicle with shattered windows also visible].

Below, a hand gun is visible in the roadway in the 1100 block of Chestnut Ave. behind a responding police unit. Yellow markers indicate spots where evidence (of any type) was identified.

Below is the location on 12th St. to which the individual fled and allegedly opened fire on an arriving/assisting police unit. Bullet holes were visible in its windshied and on the car frame (yellow markers indicate both places).

This was the view from inside the arriving police unit.

Decedent Tuggle's body awaited the Coroner (behind the tarpoulin) on Cedar Ave. south of Anaheim St. (photo below at about 10:00 a.m.). Commander Farinella said that per protocol, he was handcuffed...at which time officers disarmed him of two more guns. Paramedics subsequently arrived and pronounced Tuggle dead at the scene.

Shortly after 2:00 p.m, LBPD followed with this release:

On Sunday, May 3, 2009, an officer involved shooting occurred in the area of 12th Street and Cedar Avenue.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., Long Beach Police officers were dispatched to the 1100 block of Chestnut Avenue in response to a dispute between a male and female. Responding officers were unable to determine if a crime had been committed and left the scene.

At approximately 3:43 a.m., officers were again dispatched to the same address in response to another dispute between a male and female. Responding officers arrived and about an hour later concluded their investigation. When officers exited the residence, they were ambushed by a suspect who fired multiple shots at them. The officers then returned fire at the suspect, who fled the scene.

A unit arriving to assist was also ambushed when the hiding suspect opened fire on the vehicle as it was traveling on 12th Street near Chestnut Avenue. The vehicle was hit multiple times with gunfire, and the suspect continued to flee to the 1200 block of Chestnut Avenue where an officer discharged his weapon and struck the suspect. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene, and at this time is only being identified as a male adult resident of Long Beach, pending further investigation.

Multiple weapons belonging to the suspect were recovered at the crime scenes. No officers were injured in the shootings.

In addition to the Long Beach Police Department’s ongoing investigation, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is also conducting an independent investigation, which is routine for all officer involved shootings in Los Angeles County.

Anyone who may have witnessed this incident or has any information is urged to contact Long Beach Police Department Homicide Detectives Scott Lasch or Malcolm Evans at (562) 570-7244.
