  • (May 28, 2009, updated) -- Second St. in Belmont Shore had an officer-involved shooting shortly after midnight Thursday (May 28), a scene captured at about 12:45 a.m. by Kate Cohen, producer and co-publisher of SealBeachDaily.com.

    LBPD says in a release:

On Thursday, May 28, 2009, at approximately 12:03 a.m., Long Beach police were dispatched to a vandalism call at a business in the 5200 block of East 2nd Street, that resulted in an officer involved shooting.

A male subject broke a window at a local business and was being detained by citizens. An officer arrived on scene and attempted to take the suspect into custody.

The suspect refused to comply with the officer's orders given to him on several occasions. The officer having warned the suspect he would use force if the suspect continued to resist, deployed his police baton to attempt to gain compliance.

While attempting to take the suspect into custody, the suspect took the baton from the officer and an officer involved shooting occurred.

The suspect, identified only as a 25-year-old from Anaheim, was transported to a local hospital and is listed in critical condition.

In addition to the Long Beach Police Department's ongoing investigation, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is also conducting an independent investigation, which is routine for all "hit" officer involved shootings that occur in Los Angeles County.

Ms. Cohen emails: "Police taped off Second St. from Laverne to Nieto...Large presence, dozens of officers."

It's the second Officer Involved Shooting in seven hours...and the third in the past several days.

As separately reported by LBReport.com, at late afternoon yesterday (May 27), LBPD Detectives conducting an investigation in Compton witnessed a drive-by shooting and followed the suspects...who allegedly fired at them. The pursuit went onto the 710 freeway, ending at Willow St. where back-up LBPD arrived and an officer-involved shooting occurred; an officer and three suspcts were wounded.

And as also previously reported by LBReport.com, on May 24 an officer-involved shooting occurred in the area of 15th St/Magnolia Ave. when officers working as part of gang/violent crime task force engaged in a foot pursuit of a fleeing suspect...who allegedly produced a handgun and was fatally shot.
