(May 31, 2010) -- Shots rang out in ELB/Old Lakewood Village's Pan American Park (area Centralia St. west of Bellflower Blvd. at Charlamagne Ave.) at late afternoon (approx. 6:12 p.m.) on Memorial Day (May 31), leaving two people wounded.
A person in the park at the time of shooting said there were multiple shots; another person (from a backyard some distance away) reported hearing a "burst of 4/5 shots, less than a second delay, then 4/5 more..."
LBPD Public Information Officer Lisa Massacani (initial information) confirms that two victims were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. She says the suspect(s) fled in a vehicle.
5th district Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske says she spoke with LBPD and was told that those in the park at the time were from out of the area.
She said that she is asking for an immediate review of LB Park Ranger staffing, particularly on holiday weekends.
