(Latest update May 2, 10:30 a.m. from initial breaking May 1, 10:15 a.m.) -- Below are photos captured and shared by an LBReport.com reader showing what LB Firefighters and LB Police saw on Sunday morning (May 1) on the SE LB wetlands property (along PCH north of 2nd St.) with oil related facilities/equipment/tanks nearby. While this was taking place, windy conditions were carrying embers across PCH and igniting separate spot fires at the Marina Pacifica shopping center. LBReport.com reported these developments in real time with team coverage on-scene from LBReport.com Community Correspondent Daryl Supernaw. This wasn't just a little brush fire; LBFD confronted a potentially very dangerous situation...and knocked it down in just over an hour. (May 1, latest update 1:36 p.m.)-- A potentially horrific scenario began developing on Sunday morning when LBFD says a fire broke out on wetlands property near PCH/2nd St. when high winds downed an electric line, setting a tree/brush ablaze...with oil storage tanks nearby. Photo via LBReport.com Community Correspondent Daryl Supernaw Photo via LBReport.com Community Correspondent Daryl Supernaw Winds then sent embers across PCH where they ignited spot fires in parts of the Marina Pacifica Shopping Center. At one point, LB Firefighters were battling fires that could have spiraled out of control on two fronts.. LBFD Public Information Officer / Firefighter Matt Dobberpuhl says multiple calls came in at about 9:45 a.m. regarding grass fire/tree fire believed by fire investigators to have been caused by high winds that may have caused power lines to contact a tree that extended to some grass and clumps of trees. The wind then carried burning embers across PCH to the Marina Pacific mall area where they ignited spot fires in several areas: behind the Albertsons market, two trash cans in a storage area near Hof's Hut, and on the roof at Marina Pacific mall near Pier One imports. If YOU have news photos or video, email them to us and we'll show everyone we can at mail@LBReport.com Firefighters knocked both blazes down in just over an hour. Traffic was affected and redirected in areas stretching from PCH/Studebaker to PCH/Loynes. A total of six LBFD engines, one LBFD truck and three Battalion Chiefs were on scene in addition to multiple LBPD units to handle the traffic mess. LB's Public Service Bureau also responded, deploying signs advising of detours. Photo via LBReport.com Community Correspondent Daryl Supernaw (UPDATED May 1, 2011, 12:08 p.m. and 11:30 a.m. from front page breaking) -- SE LB residents saw smoke rising and heard LBFD and LBPD sirens at midmorning Sunday (May 1) as multiple fire and police units converged on the area from 2nd/PCH basically across PCH from the Marina Pacifica shopping center where a fire broke out in brushland/wetland area, raising concerns that it might affect some oil related items. LBReport.com began hearing from our readers in the 9 a.m. hour (thank you) and in the 10:00 a.m. hour, precautionary evacuations were directed at Marina Pacifica that for a time affected the area of Hof's Hut to AMC to the Acapulco restaurant. By 10:50 a.m., LBFD had the fire pretty much knocked down but was watching carefully for hot spots to prevent any flare-ups. By 11:30 a.m., Marina Pacifica was open again and returning to normal but traffic in the area was a mess. Further updates expected. Click reload/refresh on your browser for updated text.
