(May 16, 2012) -- A father attending his son's musical concert yesterday (May 15) at ELB's Minnie Gant Elementary School had his car burglarized in the school's parking lot.

Father and son exited the event to find the rear window of the car smashed out...with the aftermath of the auto burglary visible for the boy and his dad to see.

The concert took place from 6:00-7:00 p.m., meaning the burglary occurred while the sun was still up (local sunset at this time of year isn't until approx. 7:45 p.m.)

LBUSD spokesman Chris Eftychiou confirmed the report of a vehicle burglary at about 6:30 p.m. at Mini Gant, and police were notified and took a report. Mr. Eftychiou said LBUSD hasn't seen a rash of such burglaries but acknowledged that they do occur from time to time.

Minnie Gant, one of the highest performing schools in Long Beach, is in the 1800 block of Britton Drive (east of Bellflower Blvd., north of Atherton St.) in the Los Altos area (4th Council district).

Gant is within LBPD crime reporting district 634 (area on map below); LBPD's website indicates that within this relatively small area (Stearns to Atherton Sts, Bellflower Blvd. to Knoxville Ave.) there were five auto burglaries between Jan. 1 and April 30, 2012...three of which were in April. The area also had six home burglaries and two commercial burglaries...and both of the commercial burglaries were in April.
