(May 31, 2014, 4:13 p.m.) -- At midday Saturday, LBPD is investigating what happened at the campaign office of Long Beach 1st Council district candidate Misi Tagaloa, where the campaign says in a release that "two windows [were] shot out by at least two bullets sometime during the night."

Candidate Tagaloa told LBREPORT.com at midmorning (May 31) sometime between Friday at about 10 p.m. (May 30) when the office was closed and Saturday morning (May 31) shortly before 8 a.m. when a campaign worker opened the office, someone shot out one office window and left what may be a bullet hole in a second window fronting the 100 block of W. 7th St. just west of Pine Ave.

A campaign volunteer in candidate Tagaloa's office told LBREPORT.com that he (the volunteer) called LBPD to report what happened shortly before 8 a.m. He says the call-intake/dispatcher asked if anyone was hurt (volunteer replied "no") and asked if they had found any bullet(s) (volunteer replied "no"). The campaign volunteer says the dispatcher allegedly said if the office workers do find a bullet to call the police. No officers responded to the scene and the call (we have since learned, see below) was initially treated as a vandalism report regarding a broken window.

The campaign volunteer was given an LBPD report number. He told candidate Tagaloa what happened and candidate Tagaloa called LBREPORT.com and invited us to see what had happened.

We arrived about 9:30 a.m., took photos and below is what we saw.

As viewed from inside, window at right is shattered; hole in window from this angle is visible between "I" and "T" in banner.

From slightly different angle, zoom-in close up of hole as viewed from inside.

Clean-up inside from shattered window. Glass was also visible outside under shattered window.

Candidate Tagaloa views the scene.

Viewed from inside the office, the hole in the window appeared to us to look concave from the interior of the office.

We subsequently contacted LBPD's on-duty weekend Public Information Officer, Sgt. Megan Zabel, to ask about the incident. We conveyed what we were told; PIO Sgt. Megan Zabel looked into the matter and provided us with early information with an investigation ongoing.

PIO Sgt. Zabel said the intake/dispatcher said the reporting caller indicated a window had been broken out but didn't indicate the window had been shot out, which is why the incident was initially handled as a vandalism/broken window matter. When Sgt. Zabel conveyed to those with whom she spoke that persons at the office had told a reporter that a window had been shot out, officers responded to the location and an investigation is now underway.

So...is it accurate to say shots were fired at the windows? No, it's too early to say that at this point PIO Sgt. Zabel said. An object(s) of some kind was involved but whether it was a BB, or a rock, or a bullet(s) hasn't been determined yet; with an investigation underway over the weekend, further information may not be available until Monday (June 2), she noted.

At midafternoon, the Tagaloa campaign issued a release on the matter, stating flatly that "two windows [were] shot out by at least two bullets sometime during the night."

[Tagaloa campaign release text] The campaign office of Misi Tagaloa, candidate for the first district of Long Beach, had two windows shot out by at least two bullets sometime during the night.

"It's a shame that this is what the residents of the first district must endure on a weekly basis. Over the last few weeks there have been shootings within blocks of my office. This clearly has to stop. Residents and the police need to work together in order to have safer neighborhoods. My candidacy is more than just fixing potholes and cleaning up our alleys; it’s about a better quality of life where our families don’t have to live in fear," said Misi.

The Misi Tagaloa campaign platform advocates restoring the anti-gang unit to its original strength of twelve officers, creating neighborhood watch programs for every neighbor, the prompt removal of gang graffiti, and fully funding youth and after school programs.
