(May 18, 2015) -- An item has popped up on the May 19 City Council agenda -- set for closed session discussion at 4:30 p.m. -- to discuss the "price and terms of purchase" of 5347 E. 2nd St. (colloquially known to locals as the former site of the "Roe" restaurant/fish market.) Public comment is allowed at the start of the meeting, after which the Council goes behind closed doors.. As previously reported by LBREPORT.com, 3rd district Councilwoman Suzie Price held a community meeting on March 30 to talk in very preliminary terms about whether City Hall may or may not want to pursue with the property, located just west of Bay Shore Ave. near Claremont Ave. The parcel is apparently up for sale...and is zoned to accommodate building a parking structure. In advance of the March 30 meeting, Councilwoman Price indicated in a March 16 mass emailing: This proposal is very preliminary and has not been publicly vetted. The only thing that has been determined by the City's Development Services Department is that the Roe property is zoned for this type of use (public parking lot and/or structure). I hope you will be available to join us to discuss the process involved with this type of transaction. LBREPORT.com wasn't present at the March 30 meeting, but an attendee tells us that many of those present were from the Claremont Ave. area and voiced opposition to having a parking structure next too them. A number of questions were also left unanswered, including from where the money would come for the purchase. A quick check of the agendas for the Belmont Shore Parking and Business Improvement Area Advisory Commission doesn't indicate any agendized discussion of a purchase of the property. As reported last year by LBREPORT.com, a public brouhaha ensued when city officials took preliminary steps toward purchasing a residence on La Verne Ave. just north of 2nd St. for a small parking lot. Then Council-candidate Price was visible and witnessed firsthand some of the polarized community meetings that resulted from the proposed elimination of a residence for a few parking spaces...and the deal didn't go forward.
