(May 3, 2016, 4:30 a.m.) -- A man (adult) was shot shortly before 2 a.m. Tuesday (May 3) in the neighborhood north of MacArthur Park. The crime scene is roughly a block north of where a man was shot five days earlier (April 28) and roughly two blocks south and two blocks east of where four people were shot -- one of whom died -- a little over two weeks earlier (April 18), all in LB's 6th Council district.

Initial information is sketchy. LBPD overnight Watch Commander Lt. Paul Baum tells LBREPORT.com that police were dispatched to the 1500 block of Walnut Ave. at 1:59 a.m. (May 3) and found a man (adult) with a gunshot wound; LBFD transported him to a hospital with what is believed to be a non-life-threatening wound; there's no suspect information immediately available and LBPD's investigation is ongoing.

On April 12, 6th district Council incumbent Dee Andrews was re-elected to a third term using a write-in campaign (under LB's term-limits bypass procedure), avoiding a runoff with roughly 51% of the vote against three opponents. Council incumbent Andrews' endorsers included Mayor Robert Garcia, former Mayors Bob Foster and Beverly O'Neill and the political action committees of the LB Police Officers Ass'n and LB Firefighters Ass'n.

On Sept 15 and 22, 2015 the Council voted (without dissent) to adopt a FY16 budget, recommended by Mayor Robert Garcia, that failed to restore LBPD's former field anti-gang unit. It leaves LB taxpayers with a budgeted police level for citywide deployment roughly equivalent per capita to what L.A. would have if L.A.'s Mayor and Council cut roughly 30% of LAPD's officers.

In August 2012, Mayor Foster first recommended the budgeted elimination of LBPD's field anti-gang unit. The Council balked, funded the unit at half strength for a year, but in subsequent years quietly let it disappear. Then-Vice Mayor Garcia (chosen by Foster to chair the Council's Public Safety Committee in mid-2010) held no hearings on Foster's proposal or any public safety impacts of Foster's budget recommendations. Councilwoman Suzie Price, whom Mayor Garcia named to chair the Public Safety Committee in 2014, has followed that practice regarding Garcia's budget recommendations.
