(May 5, 2016, 2:15 p.m.) -- LBREPORT.com plans to carry LIVE video of today's Planning Commission meeting (May 5, 5 p.m.) at which residents of the Los Altos Center adjacent neighborhood (west of Bellflower Blvd) have indicated they will strongly oppose an application by a Calabassas-based entity to build a Del Taco restaurant (to be corporate owned) with a drive-through lane where a gas station currently sits on the NW corner of Bellflower Blvd. at Abbeyfield.

The grassroots Los Altos Center Adjacent Neighborhood website includes photos of a recent demonstration against the proposal and opposes the proposed development on a number of grounds, alleges flaws in city staff's report supporting the proposed development...and implicitly criticizes City Hall's 10-day public notice period [which the City Council could lengthen but has allowed to remain for many years.]

City staff's report indicates that "due to significant public opposition in response to the hearing notice, the applicant has changed its proposed [24 hour operation]...to 6 a.m. to 2 a.m."

On its website, the Los Altos Center Adjacent Neighborhoods group states:

[Los Altos Center Neighborhoods text] Just ten days ago, the residents in the Los Altos Center Adjacent Neighborhoods learned about a unique threat to their quality of life - a 24 hour drive-thru at the main entrance to their neighborhood.

In just 10 days - using old fashion community organizing and 21st Century social media the LACAN community residents have united to save their neighborhood from a poorly planned and conceived 24 hour threat.

In those 10 days, residents have emailed, written letters, attended a community meeting and now held a community protest.

Immediately, the developer dropped plans for a 24 hour drive-thru by three hours [staff report indicates four hours, 6 a.m. to 2 a.m.]

But it isn't over yet. Still to come is the Planning Commission meeting on May 5th and a planned appeal to the LB City Council if the Planning Commission votes in favor of the Conditional Use Permit.

City staff recommends approval of a categorical exemption under CEQA and approval to build/operate a 2,000 sq. ft restaurant with a drive-through lane at 2103 Bellflower Blvd. 4th district Councilman Daryl Supernaw noted the forthcoming Planning Commission agenda in his weekly newsletter and linked to it with city staff's report. On its website, the Los Altos Center Neighborhoods group alleges that city staff's report includes "mistakes, mis-informs, minimizations and misrepresentations."
