(May 20, 2016, 9:45 p.m.) -- Within a little over a week, two regional unions plus some entities and individuals with LB involvements added $40,000 to a total sum we unofficially estimate now exceeds $200,000 for the political committee supporting a Mayor/Council desired sales tax increase (Measure A) to 10% (currently 9% in Signal Hill/Lakewood and 8% in most OC cities) that current and future Councils could spend on any general fund items they wish.

The lion's share of the $200,000+ given to the [full official name] "Mayor Garcia, Foster & O'Neill Committee to Support Measures A & B to Protect Police & Fire and Repair Infrastructure in Long Beach. Major Funding by Long Beach Police Officers Association PAC and Long Beach Firefighters PAC, Local 372" comes from PACs funded by LB's Police and Firefighter unions as they (and other City employee unions) prepare to negotiate new City contracts after the election. As previously reported by LBREPORT.com, the Committee's campaign filings indicate that in early May it received the following campaign contributions: $10,000 (May 2) from the Int'l Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 11 PAC; $2,500 (May 2) from Jamee Callahan [title for ID] chairman, Metropolitan Stevedore (May 2); and $1,000 (May 6) from Mike Walter (May 6) [title for ID], Exec. Ass't to CSULB President [and former LB Harbor Comm'r.] Vote by mail ballots began flying May 9. Election Day is June 7.
