(May 3, 2017, 9:00 p.m.) -- LBREPORT.com has learned that an ELB teen was mugged/robbed while walking home in the neighborhood near Cubberley K-8 school. The crime occurred off campus on May 1 when a man (adult) allegedly drove up, exited his vehicle and robbed the pedestrian teenager who then fled on foot. For now, the suspect remains at large.

LBPD Public Information Officer Marlene Arrona tells LBREPORT.com that at about 3:20 p.m. on May 1, a teenager was robbed in the area of Kallin Ave. and Mezzanine Way. "The pedestrian victim was approached by a vehicle. The male adult suspect exited the vehicle, removed the loss [specifics of what the victim lost not specified] and the victim fled on foot. The suspect is outstanding and the investigation remains ongoing"...and LBPD asks anyone with information to contact Robbery Detective F. Gonzalez at (562) 570-7068.

A May 2 dispatch on Cubberley school's website states:

Yesterday afternoon [May 1] at approximately 3:30 p.m. one of our 7th grade students was assaulted and robbed on Studebaker and Mezzanine as he was walking home from school. The assailant was an adult male Hispanic with facial tattoos. He was driving a Black Acura 4-door vehicle from the late 80s or early 90s.

Thankfully, our student is okay.

Please speak with your students about exercising caution when walking home and please make sure they are walking in pairs or groups. If you were in the area or witnessed the incident, please contact Long Beach Police Department.

LBPD PIO Arrona says the victim arrived at LBPD's downtown station at about 5:41 p.m. to report the robbery. We haven't confirmed exactly what occurred between the time of the crime and the victim coming downtown to report the crime, but we're told [unofficially, not via PIO] that the intervening two hour period made the robbery a priority 3 "report call" and not a higher priority 1 or priority 2 call of a crime in-progress or just occurred which would bring a swift officer response. However the crime also took place on "May Day" when roughly 200 people were holding a demonstration and march (from MacArthur Park to City Hall) scheduled from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., which prompted a "tactical alert" in which LBPD doesn't respond to priority 3 calls and only dispatches officers to priority 1 or priority 2 calls.

At about 6:54 p.m. (when we believe the tactical alert was lifted), LBPD's PIO indicates an officer from the ELB beat where the crime occurred was dispatched to the police station. A crime report was taken and (as indicated above) what took place has been assigned to a Robbery Detective.

As LBREPORT.com has repeatedly stated in reporting crime statistics, every number pertains to a real person who was victimized in our city. On paper this may be listed as a "petty theft" (perhaps more, we don't know), but to the victim and his family, it was a personally traumatizing event (that like most crime victims) they won't soon forget.

Ed. note: LBREPORT.com sends the victim and his family our best wishes...and we hope LBPD manages to identify, locate and arrest the person responsible so he can be brought to justice.
