(May 17, 2018, 9:30 p.m.) -- So what happened on Ocean Blvd. at Granada Ave. at about 11:30 p.m. on May 14? LBREPORT.com has learned a bit more than indicated in LBPD's initial release.

LBPD's release states that a man approached a woman and [allegedly] stole her cell phone; bystanders came to her aid, "made attempts to detain the suspect, which resulted in a physical altercation" until officers arrived, and on arrival "officers observed a bystander detaining who they believed was a possible suspect. An officer with the help of Marine Patrol Special Services Officers proceeded to handcuff the suspect without any physical resistance, but they quickly realized he was in medical distress, and immediately removed the handcuffs" and "started rendering life saving measures"; LBFD responded and pronounced the man deceased at the scene.

LBREPORT.com has since learned more.

The L.A. County Coroner's office identifies the deceased man as Shawn Dunford, age 41, described by the Coroner office as "homeless/indigent." The Coroner's office says a cause of death has been "deferred," meaning the Coroner has ordered additional tests before making its determination; the results could take weeks.

The L.A. County Sheriff's website for previous incarcerations indicates Mr. Dunford had two contacts with LBPD within the past two years. LBPD arrested him somewhere in LB on Sept. 19, 2016 at 2 p.m. for a misdemeanor (details not indicated on LASD's website.) Two days later on Sept. 21, he was sentenced to time served and on Sept. 22 he was released.

About a year and a half later, and ten days before Mr. Dunford met his end after allegedly stealing a woman's cell phone along Ocean Blvd. in Belmont Shore, LBPD arrested him for a felony: an alleged sexual assault.

Responding to our inquiry, LBPD Public Information Officer Arantxa Chavarria tells LBREPORT that on April 4, 2018 at about 4:25 a.m., an officer was flagged down near Ocean Blvd. & Coronado Avenue regarding a female who had possibly been sexually assaulted. Officers located the suspect in the area and took him into custody after a foot pursuit. Mr. Dunford (described on LASD's website as a Black male, 6'0, 190 lbs.) was booked for sexual assault and possession of drug paraphernalia. LBPD PIO Chavarria says he was released due to a lack of cooperation by the victim.

What happens now? "As with any in custody death incidents, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office was notified and respond to the scene and will be conducting a separate death investigation." says LBPD's release.
