News / Photo Coverage We Post Pix Of Senator Alan Lowenthal, Councilmembers Reyes Uranga & Bonnie Lowenthal Modeling Enviro-Friendly Fashions To Benefit Coalition For Clean Air
(Nov. 23, 2005) -- Paparazzi, eat your hearts out. LBReport.com posts below selected photos -- selected by us to produce maximum local buzz -- of the Coalition for Clean Air's third annual fundraising fashion show: "Clean Air...Always in Fashion."
State Senator Alan Lowenthal (D., LB-SP-PV) and LB Councilmembers Bonnie Lowenthal and Tonia Reyes Uranga were among twenty-two CA public officials modeling (in the words of a Coalition for Clean Air release) "the latest garments made of organic cotton and other eco-friendly fabrics by environmentally-responsible designers and clothing companies in support of the Coalition for Clean Air's programs."
We weren't present but the Coalition for Clean Air provided us with the photos below. We accompany them with the text read as the "models" came down the runway:
State Senator Alan Lowenthal [Music: "Old Habits Die Hard" by Mick Jagger] ..."[W]e welcome Senator Alan Lowenthal. Senator Lowenthal has worked closely with the Coalition for Clean Air for years and is a champion of air quality. The Senator is casually-stylish in Timberland's hemp jeans. These jeans are being previewed for Timberland’s spring line and are not available for auction tonight.
The Sahalie turtleneck is 100% organic cotton, and can do double-duty as daytime chic -- or active wear. The sporty red twill jacket is a go-anywhere essential by "Norm Thompson." His comfortable shoes by "Ecochuck" are responsibly made from natural, recycled sources. "Norm Thompson Outfitters" was awarded the "2003 Corporate Award" from the "Ecological Society of America." Congratulations, "Norm Thompson." Thanks for the good work, Senator." | Photo courtesy Coalition for Clean Air |

Tonia is wearing another original by "Pure Nature, Natural L.A." The warm rust and green suit of pure organic wool is definitely one-of-a-kind. This unique suit is perfect for festive holiday parties. You wear it well." |
LB Councilwoman Bonnie Lowenthal [Music: "What I Like About You"] "Welcome City Councilmember Bonnie Lowenthal from the city of Long Beach. "Pure Nature, Natural L.A." is represented again with this green wool jacket with a wood button.
This beautiful kimono style jacket also comes with an embroidered matching skirt. Maggie’s organics contributed the versatile black crisscross shirt. This water-repellent,crushable wool cowboy hat is compliments of Sahalie." | Photo courtesy Coalition for Clean Air |
The group's release says eco-friendly fabrics included those made of "organic cotton, soy and bamboo silk, wood fibers, organic wool, tree tap sustainable rubber, and hemp. Environmentally-friendly clothes are those produced without pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers; dyed with natural pigments such as clay; washable through non-polluting methods; and/or, which are healthier and more comfortable to people because of their natural fibers and textures."
After the show, the environmentally-friendly fashions and products, along with celebrity donations, were auctioned off to benefit the Coalition for Clean Air. The group's president, Tim Carmichael, said in the release, "Solutions to making California pollution-free must come both from political leaders and from visionary companies like the designers showcased here tonight."
Those companies include Earth Speaks, EcoGanik, Enerchi, Indigenous Designs, Maggie’s Organics, Natural L.A., Norm Thompson, Of the Earth, Patagonia, Pharmaca, Pur Natur, Rumors, Sahalie, Simple Shoes, Sworn Virgins, Timberland, Under the Canopy and Wildlife Works.
The Coalition for Clean Air says significant air pollution reductions "could save California 1.7 million respiratory illnesses, such as asthma, every year and 2.8 million lost workdays every year."
