Protests Nationwide -- And In LB -- Planned Sat. Nov. 15 Re CA's Prop 8, Propelled By Internet

(Nov. 12, 2008) -- Protests are planned in cities nationwide -- including in LB (details below) -- on Saturday, Nov. 15 to protest CA's voter-enacted Proposition 8, now the subject of pending court challenges.

Supporters are using the internet to communicate and organize the events. The Gay & Lesbian Center of Greater LB is providing updated information online, click here. Their site included the following as of about 7 p.m. Nov. 12:

    Peace Rally and Wed-In

    This Saturday!!
    November 15th

The Center Long Beach in coalition and solidarity with community leaders and activists will join cities all over America for the National Day of Support for California Marriage Equality.

This peaceful rally will take place this Saturday, November 15th, 10:30am-1:00pm, at Long Beach City Hall, in the courtyard area.

The event will include a current legal status update regarding Prop 8, what your marriage means now, as well words of hope from our interfaith and political communities.

WE ARE PLANNING A “WED-IN” AT THIS EVENT…wherein we will have a minister symbolically marry all those in attendance (LGBTQA) to the commitment of ensuring Marriage Equal Rights for all!!

Attire:  We thought it would be fun for those in attendance to wear “wedding attire!”  This is completely up to you (What do you all think?).

    Additional info:

Parking: Parking is located in the City Hall parking structure on Broadway/Chestnut….also at the Pike parking on Shoreline/Chestnut (South of Ocean) and along Pine Ave.

Intent/Purpose:  We ask all in attendance to remember that the underlying tone of our event is PEACE….This is not intended to be another protest…but to unite in solidarity of our common goal of  Marriage Equality and community support through understanding.

Trash We are responsible for picking up all trash after the event.  Please make sure to clean up after yourselves.

Legal Compliance:  Those in the Long Beach Police Department are our friends.  We have been working closely with many of them regarding this event.  It is important that we listen to their instructions and follow all laws.

Ingress/Egress:  Make sure you enter and exit the premises in an orderly fashion.  When the event is over at 1pm, it is important that you disperse in an orderly fashion.  Please obey all traffic laws and do not obstruct traffic.

Safety Please do not bring signs with sticks.  Sticks are considered a weapon by law enforcement officials statewide and should not be brought to the rally.

This event was organized by community activists, leaders and workers from Prop. 8.  They include:

The Center Long Beach; Elisa McConnehea, Police Chief’s Advisory Group; Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride; Human Dignity Program; Kevin O’Grady, ADL; Choices of Long Beach; LB Lambda Democratic Club; Rene Castro, CCEJ; Long Beach Nicherin Buddhist-Soka Gakai leaders; Robert Garcia; Justin Rudd; gigi Acevedo; Tom Crowe; Brian Frederick; Jordana Nichols; Cory Allen; Dr. Becky Kuhn; Kristen Sifers; Tim Campbell; John Pill; Thea Mateu; Jamie Hall; Jake Orlando; Rev. JoinTheImpact.com includes the following Mission Statement:

In an effort to make a positive impact in the lives of our community, our allies, and even our opposition, JoinTheImpact.com emerged. Our movement seeks to encourage the LGBTQ community not to look towards the past and place blame, but instead to look forward toward what needs to be done now to achieve one goal: Full equality for ALL.

We stand for reaching out across all communities. We do not stand for bigotry, for scapegoating, or using anger as our driving force.

Our mission is to encourage our community to engage our opposition in a conversation about full equality and to do this with respect, dignity, and an attitude of outreach and education. JoinTheImpact, as an entity, will not encourage divisiveness, violence, or disrespect of others and we do not approve of this.

We do not stand for pointing the finger at one group and placing blame. The LGBTQ community comes in all different colors, creeds, religious beliefs, and political parties. If we allow ourselves to place blame on one community or another, then we are no better than those who oppose us.

We will not pin one community against another. At JoinTheImpact, we are all inclusive. As such, we will continue to encourage debate from all sides of the conversation provided it is civil and respectful.

We will encourage our community to not let anger stear the conversation, but with an understanding that anger is a human reaction and we hope that it can be used as a catalyst toward positive change.

Finally, we stand for national unity in the face of opposing forces that have steared the conversation into a state by state issue. We will celebrate our state by state wins, but work as one large entity to help gain these wins and will unite in the conversation against us to plant the seed of change and community.

Prop 8 enacted a state constitutional amendment reversing a CA Supreme Court ruling (4-3) that made same sex marriage a state constitutional right. CA voters statewide approved Prop 8 by a margin of 52.4% (yes) to 47.6% (no).

However, Prop 8 lost in LB citywide by a margin of 47.5% (yes) to 52.5% (no). Five of nine LB Council districts (5, 6, 7, 8 and 9) voted "yes" on Prop 8...but were outweighed by a more than two to one "no" votes in the 2nd Council district (69% "no" votes) plus a large "no" vote in the 3rd Council district.
