LBPD North Division Cops Get Segways Thanks To Donation By Signal Hill Petroleum

(Nov. 22, 2008) -- Residents, businesses and visitors in LB's North Division will see police officers on Segways -- cutting-edge two-wheeled, self-balancing electric vehicles -- thanks to a donation from Signal Hill Petroleum to the LB Police Foundation (a non-profit public safety support group) facilitated by 8th district Councilwoman Rae Gabelich.

Signal Hill Petroleum's donation was announced at a November 19 press event at LB's North Division police station. Quoted in Signal Hill Petroleum's release:

  • LBPD Chief Anthony Batts: "The Segway has proven to be a valuable tool that allows patrol officers to be more visible and accessible in community policing situations. With Segways, officers are able to get out of their cars and have increased interaction with members of our community."

  • Councilwoman Rae Gabelich: "Making business people and visitors feel safe in the Bixby Knolls area is our goal, and with the help of Signal Hill Petroleum we are able to enhance our police department's ability to do just that."

  • Dave Slater, Signal Hill Petroleum Chief Operating Officer & LB Police Foundation Boardmember: "Signal Hill Petroleum is excited about this opportunity to expand our partnership with the City, by providing funding for police Segways. Signal Hill Petroleum strongly supports the community and the Long Beach Police Department, and we believe this is a great community investment opportunity."

  • Barry Fulton, Owner Long Beach Segway: "As a Segway business owner located at the Pike in downtown Long Beach, we are proud to contribute to this partnership. We recognize the tremendous assistance Segways bring to law enforcement."
