MOTION BY SUPERVISOR DON KNABE November 10, 2009
This Board received a letter dated September 28, 2009 from the Senate Rules Committee signed by Chairman Darrell Steinberg requesting nominations from the Board of Supervisors for an appointment to the California Coastal Commission pursuant to Section 30301.2 of the Public Resources Code. I am informed the nominations are required because The Honorable Larry Clark, Mayor of the City of Rancho Palos Verdes, is no longer eligible for membership on the Coastal Commission.
The seat that Mr. Clark has filled on the Coastal Commission is one open to elected County Supervisors or City Councilmembers from an area encompassing Los Angeles and Orange Counties. This Board has the opportunity to submit the names of no less than two Supervisors and two City Councilmembers,
I, THEREFORE, MOVE that the Board of Supervisors submit the names of:
(1) The Honorable Doug Stern, Councilmember, City Rancho Palos Verdes,
(2) The Honorable Judy Mitchell, Mayor, City of Rolling Hills Estates,
(3) The Honorable Richard Montgomery, Councilmember, City of Manhattan Beach,
(4) The Honorable Suja Lowenthal, Councilmember, City of Long Beach
(5) The Honorable Gerrie Schipske, Councilmember, City of Long Beach
as its nominees to be considered by the Senate Rules Committee for appointment to the California Coastal Commission.
Councilwoman Lowenthal currently serves as an alternate voting member of Coastal Commissioner (voting when RPV Councilman Clark isn't present...and he frequently isn't/wasn't present). Councilwoman Lowenthal was named an alternate to Commissioner Clark, taking the alternate spot previously held by a prominent northern CA environmental advocate, under circumstances not fully explained publicly at the time.
