Midnight Hour Sunday: Potential Explosive Situation Averted: Vehicle Crashes Into Garage, Area 10th St/Gladys, Damages Gas Main, Triggers Gas Leak; LBPD Evacuates Nearby Area; LBFD Shuts Off Gas/Electricity; LB Gas & Bldg Inspectors Respond; 34 Yr Old LB Man Arrested On Suspicion Of DUI/Driving With Suspended License


(Nov. 23, 2014, 12:45 p.m.) -- In the midnight hour Sunday morning (Nov. 23), a potentially explosive situation arose and was averted in the area of 10th St./Gladys Ave. (north of Rose Park) after a mid-size truck went into a yard and into the side wall of a garage that had been converted into a business, damaging a gas main and causing a gas leak.

LBPD Public Information Officer Marlene Arrona provides preliminary information:

LBPD responded at roughly 12:37 a.m.; residents in the area were evacuated; LBPD detained a man (adult); LBFD shut off the gas main and turned off electricity to the location; LB's Gas Dept. and a city building inspector responded; the residence was ultimately cleared for occupancy (except for the garage/business.)

LBPD arrested and booked Baudelio Zuniga Rodriguez, 34, of Long Beach on suspicion of DUI & driving with a suspended license; LBPD's investigation is ongoing.

No one was injured in all this. All while most of Long Beach slept.
