[LBPD release text] On November 1, 2014 at approximately 3:55 PM Long Beach Police Officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Cherry Avenue regarding a possible armed residential robbery. Preliminary information reported the suspect was a neighbor and he was armed with a knife.

Upon Officers arrival they were directed to a possible location of the suspect. Officers made contact with the suspect who was still armed with a knife. The suspect was non-compliant with the officers’ commands and tried to attack them several times with the knife and a crowbar. In defense of themselves the officers discharged their weapons, the suspect was hit and expired at the scene. Officers were not injured and the knife and crowbar were recovered.

The investigation of this incident found the suspect was a male adult neighbor of the victims for approximately ten years. For unknown reasons the suspect forced his way into the victims residence armed with a knife and a crowbar. The victims in fear of being assaulted were able to run from the residence and call the police before the suspect could attack them. Once the suspect entered the residence he killed the victims' small dog and proceeded to vandalize the victims' property. The suspect also lit a fire inside the residence.

Identification of the suspect will be made by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent investigation of the shooting, as they do with all officer involved shootings that occur in Los Angeles County that result in injury or death.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Long Beach Police Homicide Detectives Malcolm Evans and Shea Robertson at (562) 570-7244. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous may call 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or text TIPLA plus your tip to 274637 (CRIMES), or visit www.LACrimeStoppers.org.

(Nov. 1, 2014, 11:20 p.m.) -- ...LBPD Public Information Officer Sgt. Brad Johnson says (10:11 p.m.) that the man armed with a knife (knife recovered at the scene) who was fatally shot was a long time (roughly ten year) neighbor of two men who reside in another unit in the same four-plex building.

PIO Johnson says that for a reason(s) currently unknown, the suspect allegedly tried to force his way into the neighbors' unit. The neighbors confronted him and on seeing he was armed with a knife, they fled the unit and called police.

PIO Johnson says LBPD responded to a reported armed residential robbery. When officers arrived, they were directed to an area where the suspect might be and they located the suspect who was armed with a knife. PIO Johnson says the suspect didn't comply with commands and the officer involved shooting resulted. (The knife has been recovered at the scene.)

PIO Johnson says officers subsequently learned that the suspect had entered the residence, killed the neighbors' dog, vandalized the residence and lit a fire in the residence.

PIO Johnson says the investigation thus far shows no history of confrontation(s) between the neighbors.

Identification of the deceased suspect will be made by the L.A. County Coroner's office [information pending.]

LBPD's investigation is continuing, along with a separate District Attorney investigation (standard in officer-involved shootings in which a person is struck.)
