At the news conference (next to last question), LBREPORT.com asked if the State Dept. or the White House had been in touch with CSULB and if so what they said. CSULB Terri Carbaugh (Associate Vice President Legislative & External Relations) looked at CSULB President Close Conoley, who shook her head "no", and Ms. Carbaugh indicated there had been no contact. [Question asked shortly before 3 p.m. PST Nov. 14.; spokesperson notes she has no info on contacts, if any, with Chancellor's office.]

Ms. Gonzalez was study design at the Strate -- Ecole de Design -- which issued a touching statement on Facebook (below.)

At the news conference, CSULB President Jane Close Conoley said Ms. Gonzalez was shot at while at a Paris restaurant with two other LB students and, one of the other two students reported to CSULB, was taken away on a stretcher. Sixteen other CSULB students abroad are safe, CSULB spokesperson Carbaugh said, and noted that roughly 80 students from France are studying at CSULB. (During the news conference, a student overhearing the event shouted, "Je suis Parisien aussi. Vive la France." (I'm also a Parisian. Long live France.)

Others speaking at the news conference were Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia (spoke in English and Spanish), CSULB Professor Michael LaForte (in Design Program, where Ms. Gonzalez was a student), LB City College Superintendent/President Eloy Oakley and LB Unified School District Superintendent Chris Steinhauser.

At the news conference, CSULB spokesperson Carbaugh asked that friends and family wishing to leave flowers or remembrances do so near the fountain outside Brotman Hall.

A message on the Facebook page of the Paris school's website states:

    Dominique Sciamma - Directeur.

[Google translation] -- Yesterday, with unbridled violence, women and men are dead, dead to live simply in a free space. Others will continue to be marked for their lives, in their body, their spirit.

I hoped to that person, in our human community, had not been touched from near and far away by these criminal acts.

    It is unfortunately nothing.

One of our students in exchange international has been the victim of the massacre of yesterday. Her name was Nohemi Gonzalez. We join in the pain of her family and her close friends.

Others have been injured and are now out of danger. We wish them a lot of courage to overcome such a test.

Our response must always be the same: live."

As reported earlier in multiple press outlets including the NYTimes, ISIS has claimed credit for the attacks.

    In its release, CSULB stated:

California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) was killed during the attacks in and around Paris on November 13. Nohemi Gonzalez, from El Monte, Calif., was a junior studying design. She was in Paris attending Strate College of Design during a semester abroad program. Specific details of her passing are not available at this time. The university will hold a vigil at 4 pm on Sunday to mourn Gonzalez’s passing and to grieve for all the victims of the atrocious attack. More information about the vigil will be shared as details are finalized.

"I'm deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Long Beach State University student Nohemi Gonzalez. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends during this sad time," said President Jane Close Conoley. "Our university stands with our nearly eighty foreign exchange students from France as they struggle with this tragedy. We will extend all support necessary to comfort them. We will also extend support to all students, faculty and staff who are in need.

  • Governor Jerry Brown issued the following statement:

"On behalf of all Californians, Anne and I extend our deepest condolences to the Gonzalez family, Nohemi’s friends and the entire Long Beach State community impacted by this senseless tragedy."

In recognition of the victims of the Paris terrorist attacks, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff. >[?While there is no known, specific or credible threat to California or the United States at this time, Governor Brown has directed his Office of Emergency Services to fully activate the California State Threat Assessment System and continue working with local, state and federal law enforcement and emergency services officials to ensure all necessary steps are taken to keep Californians safe. The California State Threat Assessment System assists in the detection, prevention, investigation and response to criminal and terrorist activity, disseminates intelligence and facilitates communications between state, local, federal and tribal agencies as well as private sector partners, to help them take action on threats.

  • CA Attorney General [and Dem US Senate candidate] Kamala Harris issued this statement: "On behalf of the California Department of Justice, I extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Nohemi Gonzales, whose young life was among those so tragically cut short by reprehensible acts of terrorism in Paris yesterday. We stand with Nohemi’s loved ones and the entire California State University, Long Beach family, as they grieve this loss and seek solace in this tragic hour. We are all Parisians today."
