Officer-Involved Shooting Thanksgiving Night: Suspect Allegedly Confronts Officer Armed With Meat Cleaver; Suspect Taken To Hospital In Stable Condition; Officer Uninjured

(Nov. 27, 2015, 12:30 p.m.) -- Following a late Thanksgiving night (Nov. 26) officer-involved shooting (reported in the 2 a.m. hour Nov. 27 by LBREPORT.com), LBPD has provided additional details and released a photo of the meat cleaver the suspect was allegedly holding in a threatening manner when police say he confronted the officer and refused to comply with the officer's commands to drop the cleaver.

[LBPD release text] -- On Thursday, November 26, 2015, at approximately 11:19 P.M., an officer responded to assist the Long Beach Fire Department with a report of an assault at a residence in the 300 block of E. Sunset Street, which resulted in an officer-involved shooting.

The preliminary investigation has determined the following:

  • The officer arrived on scene and approached the front of the residence on foot.
  • While the officer approached, a male adult exited the residence holding a meat cleaver in a threatening manner and confronted the officer.
  • The officer gave the suspect several commands to drop the meat cleaver, however the suspect refused to comply and an officer involved shooting occurred.
  • The suspect was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.
  • A weapon was located and recovered from the scene (pictured above).
  • The officer was not injured.
  • The suspect has been identified as 45-year-old Hung Doan Nguyen of Long Beach.
  • Nguyen is a resident of the location where the incident took place.
  • Nguyen will be booked on the charge of assault with a deadly weapon against a police officer.

It was determined that Nguyen was the original calling party and described to the dispatcher he had been the victim of an assault and required paramedics. The assault Nguyen reported is still under investigation. At this time we have not been able to determine the circumstances, or locate any witnesses, in regards to Nguyen’s reported assault.

The Police Department thoroughly reviews all use of force incidents through a rigorous multi-step process that evaluates legal, policy, tactical and equipment issues. In addition, all officer-involved shootings involving a suspect who is hit, are independently investigated by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

(Nov. 27, 2015, initial report 2:25 a.m.) -- LBREPORT.com has learned of an officer-involved shooting on Thanksgiving night, Nov. 26. in the neighborhood north of Del Amo Blvd. and west of Atlantic Ave.

Initial information is sketchy; LBPD investigators are on scene as we report early information. LBPD Public Information Officer Sgt. Megan Zabel tells LBREPORT.com that on Nov. 26 (Thanksgiving night), officers responded at about 11:19 p.m. to assist LBFD in the 300 block of East Sunset St. regarding an assault call [no details at this point.] When an officer approached a residence, a male adult in his 40's exited the residence and allegedly confronted the officer while armed with a meat cleaver.

PIO Zabel says the suspect refused to drop the meat cleaver and at that point an officer involved shooting occurred. The suspect was transported to a hospital in stable condition. Sgt. Zabel says the weapon has been located and will be recovered.

As is routine, LBPD Homicide investigators are on-scene along with the L.A. County District Attorney's office which conducts an independent investigation of all officer-involved shootings in which an individual is struck.
