UPDATE: LBPD Adds This Information Re Horrible Fatal Accident: Boy Riding Bike Is Killed, Girl Riding Along With Him Is Injured, Struck By Vehicle Area Woodruff @ Conant

(UPDATED Nov. 10, 2017, 11:35 a.m. from Nov. 9 initial) -- In a release this morning (Nov. 10), LBPD provides this additional information after a horrible accident Thrusday (Nov. 9) in which a boy riding his bicycle in the area of Woodruff Ave. at Conant St. was killed, and a girl riding her bicycle with him was injured, when they were struck by a vehicle.

[Nov. 10 LBPD release text] On Thursday, November 9, 2017, at approx. 3:55 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Woodruff Avenue and Conant Street regarding an injury traffic collision between a vehicle and two bicyclists, which resulted in the death of one of the bicyclists.

When officers arrived on scene, they discovered a juvenile male victim lying in the southbound #1 lane of Woodruff Avenue, just south of Conant Street. They also discovered a juvenile female victim seated on the west curb of Woodruff Avenue. Officers also observed a 2001 Chevy Suburban stopped in the #1 lane of Woodruff Avenue.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the two bicyclists were on the sidewalk on the southwest corner waiting to cross Woodruff Avenue. when the light turned green they attempted to cross in the south crosswalk, when the 2001 Chevrolet, who was traveling westbound on Conant Street, attempted to make a left-hand turn onto southbound Woodruff Avenue on a green light, struck the bicyclists in the cross walk.

Long Beach Fire Department paramedics responded and transported both bicyclists to a local area hospital. The juvenile male victim was later determined deceased. The juvenile female victim was treated and later released from the hospital.

The driver of the Chevrolet Suburban was identified as a 39- year-old resident of Lakewood. The driver had his juvenile son in the vehicle at the time of the accident, but was not injured. The driver had a valid drivers license and insurance.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the preliminary investigation.

LBREPORT.com notes that the time of the accident (3:55 p.m.) was roughly about an hour before local sunset, having switched to standard time from daylight savings time less than a week ago..

The fatal collision occurred in a residential neighborhood. As indicated above, the intersection is controlled by a traffic light with a crosswalk.

A few hours after the horrible event, votive candles and flowers were visible at the intersection.
