(October 29, 2003, updated Oct. 30 & 31) -- Part of ELB had a power outage on Oct. 29, apparently stemming from an accident nearly 14 hours earlier.
The power outage began at roughly 5:50 p.m...ending for some fortunate people near Bellflower/Wardlow about 6:20 p.m...but persisting for others (a reader informs us by email) until as late as 10:00 p.m...with some children doing their homework by candlelight.
LBPD's desk advises LBReport.com that a call came in at 3:58 a.m. stemming from a driver hitting a power pole at Bellflower/Conant. There were no injuries in the accident.
A reader less than a block from where the driver met the pole emailed that power returned for them at 9:00 p.m...although residents on the other side of Sternlee remained in the dark for another hour.
Another reader emailed that the electrical aftermath of the crash sounded like a lightning storm...although the noise sounded more like gunshots than thunder.
Reports also indicate that power was out on Chatwin Ave. south of Wardlow Rd to Spring St. and Flagstone to Bellflower. The Christian Reformed Church on the north side of Wardlow Rd. east of Bellflower had power and served hot chilli...and a number of neighborhood young people went there for a hot meal.
Southern CA Edison's media office said that due to the mountain fires, staff couldn't detail the incident.
Edison's customer service line (800 number) advised during the outage that roughly 3,100 customers were affected.
