News Soroptimist Int'l of LB Selects Young Woman With Significant Achievements Despite Challenges As First Recipient Of New Award
(Oct. 24, 2006) -- Soroptimist Int'l of Long Beach is honoring a woman whose achievements while a student at Long Beach City College and current afterschool mentoring at Jordan High School are even more remarkable in the face of her personal challenges.
Candace Meehan has been named LB Soroptimist's first "Dr. Katherine White Soroptimist Scholar." The award recognizes her outstanding academic record at LBCC and success as the current Director of Jordan High School's WRAP Program, an afterschool enrichment and mentoring program for students. | Photo source: Soroptimist In'l of LB |
As an LBCC student, Ms. Meehan was President of the Associated Women Students in 2002, a member of the all-USA Community College Academic Team...and received LBCC's Viking Award, the college's highest student honor. At the same time, she also managed to log more than 900 hours of volunteer service for the college between 2001 and 2004.
In its release, LB's Soroptimist Int'l says:
Ms. Meehan’s personal achievements are noteworthy because of her background. She became pregnant at the age of 16 and dropped out of high school. At the same time, she contracted a debilitating eye disease that she is battling to this day that left her nearly blind. As a further blow, Ms. Meehan’s young son was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis. After the death of her father, Ms. Meehan returned to school as a single mom with renewed commitment. With determination and the encouragement and support of many college administrators, she achieved great success at Long Beach City College in academics and student government.
Ms. Meehan received the highest Soroptimist Women’s Opportunity Award Scholarship in 2003 and went on to receive the highest scholarship honors at the regional level competition.
The award [now being presented] is named in honor of Dr. Katherine White, a long-time practicing pediatrician in Long Beach and a 50-year member of Soroptimist International of Long Beach who passed away in 2005.
The award will be presented at the LB Soroptimist Int'l Holiday Boutique on Saturday, October 28 at Old Ranch Country Club.
Soroptimist Int'l of LB, a non-profit group, says on its website (www.si-longbeach.org) that it's a "volunteer service organization for women in business, management, and the professions. SILB is a part of a worldwide organization with members in 125 countries and territories. Soroptimist International (SI) is the world’s largest classified service organization for women. The organization sponsors a number of international projects designed to improve the status and conditions of women and girls throughout the world."
