(Oct. 4, 2009, updated Oct. 6) -- A large crowd of motivated walkers converged on Shoreline Park in Long Beach on Sunday morning Oct. 4 for LB's "Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes" event.
Teams of adults, children, families and friends -- some living with diabetes, others who know people with the chronic illness -- took part in the fundraiser.
[update] Event coordinator Nicole Montefusco says the walk drew more than 1,000 participants and raised more than $91,733...with online fundraising continuing through October 28. [end update]
Among those attending was LB First Lady Nancy Foster...a constant photographer.
Mrs. Foster was called to the stage for welcoming remarks. She urged participants to practice a healthy lifestyle...and paid tribute to her parents. She said her father is still alive and has lived with diabetes for 52 years because her mother "has taken good care of him, making healthy foods for him."
