Mr. Cross cited among other things concern over a possible attempt to upzone WLB property (downzoned years ago in response to WLB residents' objections) as well as BNSF RR's desire (enabled by actions of the City of Los Angeles that the City of LB, LBUSD, SCAQMD, NRDC and others are now challenging on environmental impact grounds in court) to locate a massive new railyard (SCIG) on Los Angeles-owned property adjoining WLB homes and schools. "In a telephone canvass of our board yesterday [Oct. 9], the board was solidly opposed," said Mr. Cross. "We are urging the Council to exercise its oversight duty and not rubberstamp these choices" [to LB's zoning/development oversight/approval body.] Mr. Cross urged other neighborhood groups to join in urging rejection of the Mayor's Planning Commission choices. "The Mayor's choices may be in his political interests, but I don't believe they're in the public's interests," Mr. Cross said, adding "the public may ultimately have to show some Councilmembers that it's not in their political interests either."
